GENERAL INQUIRIES

What test do you run in the lab?

We run an FDA Emergency Use Authorized RT-PCR test. Our FDA Emergency Use Authorization can be found here: https://www.fda.gov/media/139293/download

There are different types of coronavirus tests. The RT-PCR test is generally considered as the gold standard for viral detection. This is the type of test we run at our laboratory. Learn more about each test type here: https://www.thermofisher.com/blog/ask-a-scientist/why-qpcr-is-the-gold-standard-for-covid-19-testing/

Is your test authorized by the FDA?

The test we run in our lab was authorized by the FDA in June 2020 and amended to include saliva as a sample type in December 2020. It is called the TRUPCR SARS-CoV-2 Kit. You can find the Emergency Use Authorization on the FDA website or via this link:  https://www.fda.gov/media/139293/download

Genophyll has received permission to test for coronavirus from the CLIA and CLIS regulatory bodies. Genophyll’s CLIA number is: 31D2209172 and Genophyll’s CLIS number is: 0014376.

BILLING AND INSURANCE

What is your billing system?

For direct payment:

  • Cash/check

  • Zelle

  • Paypal

  • Credit Card (online or onsite)

  • FSA/HSA account

We accept all insurance for qualifying tests. The CARES Act stipulates that COVID-19 testing be fully reimbursed for individual patients. Most insurance companies do not reimburse workplace surveillance testing or travel testing.

Is the test free? Is there a charge?

Due to the CARES Act, there is no out-of-pocket charge when testing is medically necessary. When medically necessary, we can bill your insurance or the government (if uninsured and a US Resident). The test is not “free” as insurance and/or the government is covering the cost of testing in this case. The out-of-pocket charge is $0.

When testing is not medically necessary, your insurance and the government may not cover the cost of testing. In this case, Genophyll Labs charges $125 for nasal swab testing and $140 for saliva. There is no extra charge for a same-day turnaround time.

I thought all testing was free and covered by my insurance. Why do you require testing be medically necessary to bill my insurance? At CVS Health and other locations, I am able to test for travel, work or school. Why does Genophyll Labs not offer the same?

Most insurances require testing be medically necessary. It is possible that at CVS Health or at other locations have received approval from local or state authorities, as insurance does not reimburse testing done for work, school or travel.

See the below examples for criteria from insurance companies:

  1. Aetna: "Aetna’s Health plans do not cover tests for purposes of school, recreation, employment or travel-related purposes, except as required by applicable law." https://www.aetnainternational.com/en/about-us/explore/health-care/prevent-manage-conditions/covid-19-extra-support-for-members.html

  2. Horizon BCBS: "If you need to be tested because you have symptoms, or because you were exposed to someone who has COVID-19, then your testing is considered “diagnostic.” You are being tested to diagnose an infection. Claims for diagnostic testing are covered by your insurance with no out-of-pocket costs. If you need to be tested to go to work or school, for travel or for some other reason not related to illness, then your testing is considered for “surveillance.” These claims are not covered by insurance." https://www.horizonblue.com/covid19

What if I receive a bill?

No need to panic! We will never bill you, unless you have an insurance that sends you the payment for the COVID-19 test (e.g. Anthem or Empire BCBS). It will always be $0 out of pocket when testing is medically necessary. You have likely received an Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company. This is simply a statement from your insurance company stating their fee schedule and how much they’ve paid for the COVID-19 test. Our policy is that we accept what insurance pays and nothing more. Even if insurance does not fully cover the service, we will never balance bill and put the responsibility on you. It is our responsibility to appeal if needed with your insurance company and there is no action required from you. If you ever have any concerns regarding billing, you can email us at billing@genophyll.com (Note: this is not a .us address like our general email, mail@genophyll.us).
